Fennel is a vegetable, spice and medicinal plant known worldwide today and is very popular in Indian cuisine. It impresses with its special taste and is reminiscent of aniseed and liquorice. The healthy essential oils make it very aromatic.

Fennel gives dishes a more oriental and very special taste. Fennel seeds develop their best aroma when they are crushed in a mortar. Fennel softens the spiciness of other spices somewhat.

Fennel is used as a spice, for example as a tea in a wide variety of tea blends, but also as an additive to fish dishes, fatty poultry or as a spice for bread and salami in Italian cuisine.

Incidentally, fennel has a wide range of origins: it can be found from southern Europe to western Asia. Fennel is known in three different variations: as vegetable fennel , spice fennel or wild fennel. The fennel seed, which is used as a spice, consists of the dried seeds of the herb fennel.

Good to know:

Fennel was voted Medicinal Plant of the Year in 2009 because the tuber is rich in vitamins (particularly vitamins A, K, E, folic acid and beta-carotene) and, in addition to numerous vitamins, has a very high content of vitamin C and iron. Unbelievable, but fennel has almost twice as much vitamin C as oranges, which supports the immune system and thus promotes vitality.

The seeds, which are used as a spice, are not only good for bad breath, but are also very healthy for the stomach. Due to the up to 95 percent highly effective essential oils, they have a calming effect on the gastrointestinal tract and help with digestive problems. Fennel seeds also relieve sore throats and stomach cramps, help with coughs and improve digestion.

Fennel seeds infused as a tea and sweetened with honey is a delicious drink that children also like - especially in the cold season!

You can chew fennel seeds immediately after eating to stimulate digestion.
